How the runway calculator works

Runway is spendable cash divided by monthly costs. If you have income that continues but is smaller than your costs, the calculator divides by the gap between them instead. It shows the cautious figure first, the one that assumes income stops, because that is the number that tells you how safe you are.

How to read your result

  • Under one month: your cash is nearly gone. Focus on bringing in money and cutting what you can.
  • One to three months: you have some room, but one bad month would hurt.
  • Three to six months: a common target for a steady income.
  • Six months or more: a comfortable buffer, and a common target for irregular income.

Read how many months of expenses to save to choose your own target, and what financial runway is for the full idea.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how long my money will last?

Divide your spendable cash by your monthly costs. If you have income that continues but is smaller than your costs, divide by the gap between them instead. The calculator above does both and shows the answer in months and days.

What counts as cash in a runway calculation?

Money you could spend this week: bank balances, mobile wallets and cash in hand. Leave out fixed deposits and investments you could not use without a penalty, and subtract bills that are already due.

What counts as monthly costs?

Everything that leaves every month: rent, food, utilities, transport, loan installments, subscriptions and money you send to family. For costs that vary, use an average of the last three to six months.

How many months of runway do I need?

Three to six months of essential costs is a common target for a steady income, and six to twelve for an irregular one. Your own situation decides; the guides explain how to choose.

Is this calculator financial advice?

No. It is arithmetic on the numbers you enter. It does not know your tax, debts or plans, and it is not a substitute for a qualified adviser.

Are my numbers saved or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is stored or sent to us.
